If you don't know about Spirit Day, read this article. It's an annual event (this year on October 19th) to spread awareness for LGBT issues, in particular suicides among LGBT teens caused by bullying that they face because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. It's an American thing originally but websites like deviantART have spread the awareness across the globe and I don't see why the rest of us can't "wear purple" too.
